Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis)
Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis)
The Vampire Shrimp is a unique freshwater filter-feeding shrimp known for its large fan-like arms and calm personality. Despite the intimidating name, this species is completely peaceful and spends most of its time sitting in areas of strong flow, using its feathered fans to catch tiny food particles from the water.
Their color can vary depending on mood, environment, and diet, ranging from blue-gray and tan to deep brown or almost black. Larger specimens develop a thick, armored appearance that gives them a prehistoric look in the aquarium.
Unlike most shrimp that scavenge along the bottom, Vampire Shrimp prefer elevated perches near current where they can feed naturally. They do best in mature aquariums with stable water quality and plenty of oxygenation.
