Platinum Green Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Platinum Green Angelfish is a rare and visually refined variant of Pterophyllum scalare, known for its clean platinum base coloration enhanced by a subtle green iridescent sheen. Under proper lighting, this fish exhibits a soft metallic glow that shifts between silvery white and faint green tones, giving it a sleek, almost futuristic appearance.

Unlike heavily patterned angelfish, the Platinum Green focuses on minimalism—smooth coloration, gentle gradients, and elegant finnage. Its tall, laterally compressed body and flowing fins create a graceful, gliding presence that stands out in both planted and modern aquascapes.

Despite its delicate look, this angelfish retains the typical semi-aggressive temperament and mild predatory instincts common to the species.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 29 gallons is suitable for a single specimen, though 40+ gallons is recommended for pairs or community aquariums. Taller tanks are preferred to support their vertical body shape and finnage.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods:

• High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple diet)
• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
• Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for enrichment and conditioning
• Occasional spirulina or vegetable-based foods for balance

Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.

Tank Mates:
Choose tank mates carefully due to their semi-aggressive nature:

• Compatible: Larger tetras, gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras, plecos, and other semi-peaceful species
• Use Caution: Other angelfish (pairing and territorial behavior), certain barbs depending on temperament
• Avoid: Small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras)
